Summary #2 Examples

Here are some examples of good summaries from our Week 11 summary HW.  Note that these are not perfect summaries, but they are good in two ways: first, the student included all or most of the main ideas from the reading; and second, the student did a good job of paraphrasing the information in his/her own words. Also note that the final two summaries DO NOT include in-text citations. Please remember that you should ALWAYS include citations when you take paraphrase or summarize information from other sources.

Passage 1 Example 1:

According to a language expert, English will not be the most important in future because the world is intricate.  Therefore, the native English speakers will decrease.  There is different [thinking] of ways in both developed and developing nations.  Although it was said that English is important as a second language, in the next ten years, Mandarin will be the new second language (Schmidt).

Passage 2 Example 1:

English is spoken all around the world. By 2050, it is expected that half the world get to have skills speaking English.  It is used in various fields.  Although English is not easy, it is the global language.  English has several difficulties in grammar, pronunciation, and spelling.

Passage 2 Example 2:

The [most common] language which is used in the world is English.  By the near future, it will be spoken with some degree of skill by half of people all over the world.  The international business, politics, and diplomacy have been made by globalization.  English has some difficulties such as spelling, pronunciation, and grammar, yet it will have become the world's common language.

Week 13 Blog Response

Hi!

For this week's response, I'd like you to go back and look over your classmates' responses, choose a response that you disagree with (even if only a little!), and respond by writing your own opinion.  To express your disagreement politely, you must use at least one of the following expressions:

  • I see what you mean, but I think that......
  • Perhaps that's true, but it may be that.....
  • True, but I'm afraid I disagree (with).....
  • There may be some truth in what you say, but it's possible that.....
  • I agree with what you said about.....; however/on the other hand, I would have to say that.....
  • I understand your point, but I see it a little differently.
  • That may be the case, but I feel.....
Note: You may have to go back to older blog responses from the early weeks of the semester (weeks 3, 4, 5, etc.). Some of these question topics elicited a few responses that you can probably disagree with.

Good luck!
