Week 5 Question

Our next topic in Mosaics 2 deals with appearance. More specifically, we will look at an article that explains the history and significance of tattoos in different cultures around the world. Since arriving in the U.S., you've probably noticed that tattoos are quite popular among men and women of all ages and backgrounds (though not everyone thinks them socially acceptable, just ask my mom!).
Are tattoos socially acceptable in your country? Why or why not? If yes, how popular are they? Who usually gets tattoos? Would you ever get a tattoo?

  1. Tattoos are becoming popular in teenagers and young adults in my country even though it is still quite social unacceptable. I do not know how popular the tattoos are now; however, I do see lots of young generation’s icons are getting them and love to show them while it was impossible for an icon to have a tattoo in my generation. I assume that there are lots of young people will follow their icons. In the old time, tattoos belonged to people who were member of a gang. I would see people who wore them quite often when they were arrested for the crime they committed. Therefore, tattoos and crimes or gangs were synonymous. Now a day, teenagers and young adults who wear tattoos for independent declaration and being trendy, no matter they are criminal or decent. It would give people who need to judge you- job interview, marriage matching etc. some space to wander if you are the right person to pick. I mean, it will give people wrong impression. Although it is unfair to judge wine by its bottle, it is what people do- they usually pick the bottle by its look and this is the most useful marketing strategy for wine vintner. I also know that lots of people who wear tattoos go visiting a dermatologist or plastic surgeon to erase their taboo later on. It just not worthy to get the painful sting to have the tattoos on then get it again to erase the tattoos. Moreover, you get yourselves exposed to blood born disease such as hepatitis and HIV. Listen to your Mom! She is always right!

  2. As far as i concern, i think that tattoos socially in Thailand are unacceptable. Because most people in Thailand usually look down people who have tattoo that they are a bad person. Furthermore, having tatto in Thailand normally people will think that you are one of the member in the gangster and do not want to communicate with. It is kind of bad first impression when you see some one who have tattoo. Foe this reason, I have never think about having tattoo or even I think to have a tattoo in my body my parent absolutely will get angry and do not allow me to do it.

  3. Today, many people are having tattos. In my country Japan, Japanese people not accept because Japanese people think tattos are only doing Yakuza. Yakuza is kind of American Mafia. Therefore, tattos show the who is bad person is. Therefore, I haven't think about having tattos on my body.In addition, around the asia country, they think the tattos bad thing same as Japan.

  4. In Japan, those who have a tattoo are considered immoral. Getting tattoos is the evidence of living dishonestly. That is, tattoos socially are unacceptable. Therefore, I will never get a tattoo. However, a few Japanese people, these days, come to have a tattoo as fashion even though that is not general. Their act of having tattooed is like the initiation, I think. Erikson, a phychoanalyst in the USA, proposed the idea of the moratorium, which is related to a person who has avoided developing emotional maturity. Perhaps they use tattoos as the means to get through the moratorium.
Before long, many Japanese people may get a tattoo because they like to imitate what Westerner does.

  7. In my country, Japan, tatoos are getting popular as well. Some of famous persons got tatoos. Despite this fact, tatoos are not acceptable. Getting tatoos is seen as unsocial or rude. Moreover, some people recognize that people who get tattos are gangsters or sny strange group. After all, Japaese have a prejudice toward them. I was suprised that American people get tatoos more than I expected. One of the reasons to get tatoos in U.S. might be fasionable or glamorous. However I don't want to get tatoos, because I have many ways to look nice without getting tatoos.

  8. In my country, tattoos are not accepted socially. As Reina said, tattoo is one of the symbols of Yakuza in Japan. I have never seen the real Yakuza person, but,in many TV dramas or movies,we can watch their appearance. So, we have the same images for Yakuza and tattoos. However, recently, tattoos are regarded as a kind of fashion in young people.Especially, there are some young people who long for the famous musician or actor/actress and try to imitate their fashion. There are a lot of kinds of 'fake tattoos'at the store. The tattoos for fashion don't have a bad meaning, but it's tattos. We have to wound our bodies. I think, because of this, most of Japanese parents and adults don't allow their children to do tattoos.

  9. In our religion, tattoos is forbidden and unacceptable, and anything in our religion is forbidden has reason behind it. First of all, tattoos had been forbidden because you change God created. Second, when you do tattoos, you hurt yourself by burning yourself by some tools could make you bleeding and losing some blood. If you don't need this blood that you lose it while you are doing some tattoos, I recommend you to donate it to people who really need it. God is beautiful and loves beauty, and if God think tattoos could make you beautiful, God would creat you with tattoos. Finally, tattoos could cause many diseases. For example, if the tool that is used in tattoos, is dirty by blood, it could cause AIDS or Hepatitis. In conclusion, Don't throw yourselves into destruction.

  10. It is true. Tattoo is booming among young people to make their body attractive. However, it is traditionally accepted in Korea duo to Confucian morals. Some people who are old generation think that causing harm to body is impolite to parents because they regard someone’s body is not only his or her own body, but the body could be parents’. In my opinion, when we think to wnat getting tattoos on body, we should consider our parents' feeling. we have a duty to protect and keep our body naturally.

  12. Actually, tatoos isn't acceptable yet in Korea, because a lot of gangs usually get tatoos so,when Korea peaple see someone who get tatoos, they are scared and avid. More and more, however, people who get tatoos are increasing usually young people. They think that tatoos are one of expression. So do I.
Therefore, if i have an opportunity to get tatoos, I want to try it.

  14. In Thailand, somebody wants to get tattoos for fashion. Some wants to get tattos because it is represent for something about black magic, which is believed in some people. In Thai social, people who got tattoos are acceptable for somebody;howover, some don't like it. It depends on each person.

People who got tattoos always were looked as bad people(If they have a lot and it is a dark magic pattern). On the other hand, people who got fashion tattoos are ok.

  15. Tattoos are forbidden and not acceptable in our religion because as Moha said it hurts when you get tattoo, it could change your body so anything could change your body isn't acceptable in our religion. Also you loose a lot of your blood while getting tattoos. There are some people need this blood which you loose, so instead of loosing it you can give it to who really need it. so i would never get a tattoo.

  17. In my country tattoos are totally unacceptable thing. I think you already know why :). Yes, your right, this is because of the religion. Islam doesn't approve tattoos. and not only Islam all religions in the world deny it. Because we have to keep our bodies the same how God is creating us. Besides, those who are not religious it has scientific explanation. The medicine says that tattoo may destroy our blood structure, in other words it makes your blood "dirty" which can lead to cancer. I'd never have tattoo on my body. In my country usually prisoners have tattoos.
