Hi!
I enjoyed reading your responses to the week 1 question. Please go back and read what your classmates wrote and the reply comments that I left for each student's response.
This week's question is sure to generate a variety of perspectives on a controversial topic that affects everyone on campus. Oyatullokhi wants to know your opinion on the following question:
Why do people smoke while they know it is very unhealthy?
Good question Oyatullokhi!
Please write as much as you can on this interesting topic. The more you write, the more interesting it will be for me and your classmates to read your response.
Happy writing!

Smoking is a bad habit that is spread it in our society. It has many health problems. Therefore; why people are smoking while they know it is unhealthy and will cause diseases to their bodies?. First of all, is an addiction. It is the most important reason to continue, and the failure of attempts at smoking cessation. Second, sadness and anger, as some people believe wrongly that smoking helps to overcome the sadness and frustration and anger. For example, when smoker has a problem, the first thing that he or she does is to spark the cigarettes in order to reduce the anger and helps in getting the pleasure. Next, is self-image, as a means to achieve maturity and manhood or womanhood especially teenagers. In addition, fear of weight gain. Some people believe, especially women that smoking cessation leads to weight gain. To sum up, an addiction, sadness and anger, self-image, and fear of weight are some of the reasons that people are continuing to smoke while they know it is unhealthy and will cause disease to their bodies.
ReplyDeleteHi Aisha,
DeleteYou've presented a lot of good ideas in this response. I completely agree with your point that people smoke to deal with anger and sadness. I also know a lot of women who smoke because they say it lessons their appetite.
On Grammar:
One thing I've noticed in your blog response and in your paragraph is that you sometimes omit (leave out) the subject of a sentence. For example, in your fourth sentence, you say, "first of all, is an addiction." This sentence needs a subject.
When you finish writing something (paragraph, blog, essay, anything!), go back and check each sentence to make sure you have not omitted the subject.
In my opinion, this main reason is that they are addicted to smoke. In other words, for smoker, smoking has advantage. For instance, although I don't know well about taste of it, most people who smoke say that it tastes good. In addition, they believe or, in fact, it may be true that smoking makes them calm or refreshed. The example of my grandfather is that he doesn’t stop smoke, in spite of doctor’s orders, because he never feels angry or a need for something to put in his mouth, wants to become composed or kills time without smoking. This is habitual activity for him. Of course, he knows that smoking is unhealthy, but he can’t stop, and he doesn’t mean to give up smoking. Other smoking advantage for not smoker, but who will smoke someday is some influence such as movie actors, advertisements and recommends of friends. People who will want smoke in the future also know about danger of smoking, yet they give in to temptation of these because they think that they will not be ill unless they smoke too much, and they will be able to stop smoking when they feel needless on smoking. Therefore, people smoke in order to keep their habit by addiction and begin to smoke as a result of certain impression of addiction.
ReplyDeleteHi Kate,
DeleteThe example you presented about your grandfather represents what a lot of smokers go through: it's really hard to quit a habitual activity that makes you feel relaxed! I also agree that smoking has been popularized--among young people in particular--because of the influence of movie stars and advertisements.
On grammar:
When we give an example, and we don't want to say "For example," (which can be overused), there are a couple of ways we can do this. Instead of saying "The example of my grandfather is that......," try using the following structures:
1. One example of this type of smoker is my grandfather. He doesn't......
OR
2. My grandfather is a perfect example of this. He doesn't.....
People who are smoking while they already known is pretty common. The first is some people can not control themselves. They know smoking is not a good habit, but they enjoy that feeling when they smoking. For example, my father have been smoke for 20 years. He said sometimes he just get used to keep something between his finger. Next, some girls want to smoke to lose weight. They think smoking can lose weight in some ways. Yes it can, but losing weight have many ways to do. Like I have a good friend, she always super care about her weight, and she smoked since last year. Actually she doesn't like it, but for the reason of losing weight. She wanted to try it. In addition, Some young people think while smoking they looked very cool. Actually this idea is childhood, most people don't care you looking good when you smoking or not, also they just know you are smoker. In conclusion, people who are smoking because they can not control themselves, losing weight and looking cool.
ReplyDeleteHi Bohan,
DeleteAll of my friends smoked when were young, because they thought it looked cool. I never thought it was cool (I still haven't smoked a cigarette!), but I could never persuade my friends to stop smoking.
On grammar:
There are two verb tenses you used incorrectly that I'm pretty sure you are familiar with.
1. Present Progressive
You wrote, "...when they smoking." Here you are using the present progressive; you need a "be" verb. --> When they ARE smoking.
2. Present Perfect Progressive
You wrote, "My father have been smoke for 20 years." -->My father has been SMOKING for 20 years.
This is from Fumika:
ReplyDeleteSmoking is bad for our body is a common sense, but a lot of people smoke. Why they smoke? There a few reasons that people start to smoke and continue to smoke.
Most countries do not allow that young people smoke in their low. However many young people smoke because of their curiosity. For example, young long for famous actors who smoke in TV programs and movies. They think smoking is cool, and try to imitate actor’s smoking action. Next, environment is also cause of leading people to smoke. If all people smoke except you, what do you feel? Most people might feel uncomfortable and lonely. Furthermore, if your boss forces you to smoke, can you refuse flatly? It might be hard work. Therefore, many people start to smoke.
Why people continue to smoke even though they know smoking is bad. My smoking friend told me, when he could not smoke for a long time (about 2 hours?), he was annoyed and could not concentrate anything. After or during smoking, tobacco made him relax. He had been tried to stop smoking some times, but he gave it up always. Some of smokers notice that they should stop smoking, and try to do it, but it is very hard. Because, tobacco contains cocaine which is addictive. Smoker body will be addicted after they have smoked once. Besides, some people may think smoking is cool, also may think it is the proof of adults.
Therefore, many people smoke, nevertheless they know smoking is very unhealthy.
Hi Fumika,
DeleteI agree that curiosity is probably a huge factor leading to young people's smoking. Doesn't everyone want to try something they are not supposed to do? I never thought about "work pressure,"--that one's boss could pressure a person to smoke is an insightful observation. I bet this is common in countries where work relationships are developed and reinforced outside the workplace (like in South Korea, for example.)
On grammar:
Two quick, related points on grammar we've covered in the past two weeks:
1. You don't need a comma before AND or other FANBOYS if the following idea is not an independent clause.
Example: "They think smoking is cool, and try to imitate...."-->They think smoking is cool and ....(no comma because the second idea is not an independent clause.
2. Remember that BECAUSE introduces a dependent clause; therefore, it is not a complete sentence by itself. Combine the sentence "Because (no comma) tobacco....." with the sentence that follows: "Smokers body will be...."
-->Because tobacco contains cocaine which is addictive, smoker body........

ReplyDeleteI agree with all of you brothers and sisters, you brought some bright examples, and we all know that people who smokes they know that it is very unhealthy. Also, it can damage their organisms, so they know all of that bad things which can effect them when they smoke cigarette. How cigarette can damage people's organisms? Lets look to some cigarette effects which doctors and scientists noticed.
ReplyDeleteSmoking health risks. You can eat five portions of fruit or veg a day and exercise regularly – but healthy behaviour means little if you continue to smoke. The message that 'smoking is bad for you' is an old one, so not everyone gives it their full attention.Below we list the health risks of smoking.
Most people know that smoking can cause lung cancer, but it can also cause many other cancers and illnesses.
Smoking directly causes over 100,000 deaths in the UK each year and contributes to many more.
Of these deaths, about 42,800 are from smoking-related cancers, 30,600 from cardiovascular disease and 29,100 die slowly from emphysema and other chronic lung diseases.
Cigarettes contain more than 4000 chemical compounds and at least 400 toxic substances.
When you inhale, a cigarette burns at 700°C at the tip and around 60°C in the core. This heat breaks down the tobacco to produce various toxins (Reviewed by Dr Patricia Macnair, GP, and Based on a text by Dr Carl J Brandt, Last updated 02.11.2011. http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/health_advice/facts/smokehealth.htm).
Finally, all the smokers are familiar with all these effects, which cigarette can be a cause of it, and notwithstanding these effects, they are continuing smoking, so the reason is just one that they used to it, and some of them can stop smoking but unfortunately most of them can not.
You point out all of the relevant reasons why it just doesn't make any sense to continue smoking. You're also right when you say that smokers are "used to it." Unfortunately, many will never stop smoking.
DeleteOn grammar:
Be careful with "comma splices." This is where you connect two sentences with a comma. See your first sentence as an example of what a comma splice is. We will discuss comma splices in class on Tuesday.
One more note: you've included the website where you found most of the information in your second paragraph. However, even though you have provided a reference for this source, you STILL need to write the ideas in your own words. The idea is to change the grammar and some of the vocabulary (like we talked about last semester) without changing the meaning. We'll talk about this more later on in the semester.
