Week 5 Question

Hi!

On to another topic...This week's questions is presented by Bohan, and it's actually quite relevant given that spring break is right around the corner (in another month or so). It never hurts to start planning early. Here is the question:

If you travel to other state, like California, Utah, NewYork...... What kind of transportation would you like to choose? (by air, Train or Car) Why?

Think about your travel preference, and then write as much as you can in your response.

As always, happy writing!

  2. Traveling between states in the U.S. is interesting. I traveled by airplane and car in last vacations. In last winter, I traveled to California by airplane. I chose this transportation because it took a short time to travel than other transportations. For example, if someone wants to travel from Missoula to San Francisco by car, he/she will spend 18:22 hours ride. On other hand, if someone travels from Missoula to San Francisco, he/she will spend may be 4 hours by airplane. However, if the place is so far, I think travel by airplane is better than car because it will abbreviate of time and fatigue. In addition, if the weather is not good to travel because there is snow; therefore, people will put some special chains to the tires to protect their cars from slides. However, if the distant is short and the weather is nice to travel, so people will use their cars to travel because they want to see the landscapes while they driving.

    1. Hi Aisha,

Where did you travel by car? How did you enjoy that? There's no doubt that flying is much more efficient in terms of time. Seeing the landscape (while maybe not a good idea since I should be watching the road and not the passing mountains and animals)is one the reasons why I like to drive, even when the distance is far.

      On grammar:
In this reply I noticed the same error twice: in your last two sentences, you have "if-clauses" that that are followed by "therefore" and "so." These connecting words connect two INDEPENDENT clauses, not a dependent clause to an independent clause.

Incorrect: If it is cold, so I won't go outside.
Correct: If it is cold, I won't go outside.

      Hope this helps.

    2. Aisha I agree with all you said like by airplane it much easier and it takes a few hours to travel. However, I afraid I can't be agree with that traveling by airplane it is better than traveling by a car. Also, you brought good points about seasons how drivers should prepare their car for the travel, but I think traveling by airplane doesn't give that feeling when you travel by car and that feeling is like dreaming while traveling by car like each second you are watching the beauty of the nature and animals, farms incredible houses which were built like in a myth. May be you can be right about traveling and I can be wring and may be what did you say can be a fact but people says, "the best knowledge is an experiences," so by saying this I mean I traveled by car and airplane and I liked traveling by car. I hate to travel by airplane it is like you are sleeping whole that hours and when you wake up you are on the other place. For this reason I like to travel by car I wanna see the distance I wanna see how other places looks like how are their condition of life in country sides etc....

  3. I totally agree with Aisha's opinion, where she mentioned, "However, if the distant is short and the weather is nice to travel, so people will use their cars to travel because they want to see the landscapes while they driving". When I was in Tajikistan I just wanted to be in U.S. and when I came to U.S. I wanted to visit big and famous cities as all visitors want like New-York, Los-Angeles, Mayami, Chicago etc, and travel all these cities by plane, because I didn't want to spend a lot of time when I travel with plane. In contrast with car and train I could spend a lot of time in order to travel to another city. However, when I travel from Denver (Colorado) to Missoula (Montana) by plane I didn't liked it because I couldn't see some places among the way, but when I traveled from Missoula (Montana) to Chicago by car, to be honest it was amazing I felt the beauty of U.S. while I was driving and seating in the front of the car while my friend was driving; vivid, landscape, houses, farms, factories, lakes, bridges and so on, and I was very happy to see all of these live. In contrast when I traveled with plane it was boring sleeping, seating in one place without moving, looking behind the bench of the person who seats front of you while flying, and also waiting in the airport for a while, waiting in the line for a while. For these reasons i like to travel with car because I want feel the beauty of a U.S. nature, and also if you travel with car you can travel many cities and many states. For example, while I and my friend were travelling from Misoula to Chicago we stopped for brake in thirteen cities and four states. In contrast, if we used plane we were able to see just to places.

    1. Hi Oyatullokhi,

You give lots of good examples of why driving (even a long distance) can be a worthwhile experience. In fact, it's probably fair to say that you can really "get to know" a country by crossing it in a car!

      On grammar:
You've got some really stringy sentences in this response in addition to one or two run-on sentences. Even though blog responses do not have to be formal, we still want put into practice what we are studying in class right now. Go back and look at the following sentence:
"However, when I travel from Denver........"
This sentence is both stringy and a run-on. Amazingly, there are nine (!) clauses in it.
Go back and decide where good breaks are and add periods, connecting words, and so on in order to make this sentence into 3 or 4 sentences.

      Hope this helps.

  4. Frankly speaking, wherever I travel, I would not like to go there by airplane. I don’t like airplane because there are few possible to live if it happens air accident. On the contrary, if it happens train or car accidents, we have possibility to be alive. I heard that airplane is the most safety transportation, yet I don’t like it; when I go to other state where is not far away from here, I’ll prefer cheaper one, car or train. However, if I travel to a long way off, I’ll choose the way which is cheap and a short time. In this case, if airplane was tremendous low price, I would unwillingly choose it.

    1. Hi Kate,

Interesting perspective. I have to admit that I get "butterflies in my stomach" every time I fly. They say it's so safe to fly, but when I am 25,000 feet above the ground and the plane hits some turbulence, I get very very nervous. Before I fly, I always try to relax my mind and not think about the .0005 percent chance that something could happen.

      On grammar:
Since we just talked about conditionals (if-clauses) today in the TOEFL class, I thought I'd make a comment or two on your use of them in this response.
First, when we talk about general facts or normal behavior, we just use the simple present in both clauses.
Incorrect: If I travel a long way off, I'll choose the which is cheap.....
Correct: If I travel a long way off, I choose the way which....
Explanation: This is a general fact (not a specific case), so we use the simple present.

By the way, the same rule applies to adverb clauses of time that include "when."

Also, the grammar in your last sentence (present unreal conditional) is accurate.

  5. ayidah ...
In the past, I traveled by airplane .I think airplane is the most comfortable transportation to travel because it is faster than any other transportation. However, I really want travel by car because I think car is the most interesting kind of transportation .one of the most interesting thing is that you can see new things while you are traveling. Also, you can use your car when you arrived to city. you can travel in any time that you want it, too .however, I do not have any plan to travel in next vacation , but if I change my mind and travel , I will not go to far state and I will use care. The purpose is if I use car, I can go anywhere in it and in any time. Also, I can bring whatever I need. Also, I never traveled by car in the United States. So, I want try it

    1. You should definitely try traveling by car in the U.S. if you get the chance. As both Aisha and Oyatullokhi said above, traveling by car is a great way to see the landscape. Imagine this: you are driving from Missoula to Billings; you look out the window and see beautiful, snow-capped mountains; you see a herd of pronghorn (North American antelope) running almost as fast as your car is going; you never realized Montana had so many rivers.

      On grammar:
      1. Don't forget to capitalize the first word of a sentence!

      2. In your third to last sentence, instead of saying "The purpose is if...," you could say "The reason is that if...."

      Hope this helps.

  6. It is my turn! Actually this question confuse me for a long time, because air plane is the fastest transportation to travel, but I still afraid about air crash or other kind of accident. Train is a good choice, it is comfortable and relax. It is not slow now, some of the train can even run over 200mile per hour. However, by trains are not very convenient, like missoula, we not have train station for traveler. For all, I prefer to choice cars to travel, whatever how far it is. Car likes a small house, we can put everything in it. Also cars are the most convenience transportation to use for a travel. It is cheap and fast and we can control it. If we found somewhere awesome, we can just turn off the street and go there. Also it is a small space belongs to us, we can singing, laughing, talking and doing anything in it, but other transportation can not.

    1. Complete control. That is how you have accurately described what we have when we drive a car. However, I have to admit that I wish the U.S. had a better train system. I loved riding the train when I was in South Korea. Supposedly Obama wants to develop the train system in the U.S., but I don't think this will actually happen.

      On grammar:
      1. See my comments above on conditionals (Aisha and Kate's response).

      2. Word Form (be careful!)
Incorrect form: "....the most convenience transportation." (we need the adjective form)
      Correct: ...the most convenient transportation.
      **check sentence #3

Incorrect: "We can singing, laughing...." (we need based form of the verb after "can")
      Correct: We can sing, laugh....
      **check sentence #6

  7. I like to travel. I prefer to use an airplane when I travel to other state. I also like travel by car. I can sing, listen to music, and eat anytime without regard for other passenger. (I ride with my family or friends) I would like to use a car when I move at close range. However, traveling to other state is so far (surely, the corner of state near next state) ; therefore, using car needs more time than airport. In addition, a driver becomes very tired after he or she drive a long time. Night driving is dangerous. Thus, I would like to travel to other state by airport. By the way, after this semester, I am planning trip Detroit to New Orleans by a rent car with my friends. (driver are only two person including me!!)

    1. Traveling to New Orleans by car is a blast. I know because I did it when I was 20. We had a great time visiting Louisiana's beautiful lakes, beaches, and swamps. That's right: swamps! I hate driving at night and avoid if possible. Some people I know never do it!

      On grammar:
      1. "...using a car needs more time..." -->requires more time (thing not a person)

      2. Check for "choppy sentences: you have lots of short sentences that could be combined with connecting words.
      Example: sentence 2 and 3
-->I also like travel by car because I can sing.....

      Hope this helps

  8. Hi Josh,

I wonder you have traveled there by the car! I'm really excited for my trip.

    1.
Using the new washing machine requires much money than the old one.

    2.
I also like travel by car because I can sing, listen to music, and eat anytime without regard for other passenger.

Night driving is dangerous thus I would like to travel to other state by airport.

Thank you for pointing my mistakes.

  9. Hi Kate, I agree with what you said about there are a few possible to live if it happen an airplane accident.; however, I would have to say that also many times of cars accident, people who are in the cars are not live even if the accident isn’t so bad. People who have the chance to live, they will live even if there is an airplane accident. For example, maybe after the airplane accident, the person will fill down to the sea and this is helping him/her to be survived.
