a. Writing
Write a 5 paragraph essay in 30 minutes. Make sure you essay has the following:
- introduction (can be funnel or interesting story) with thesis;
- strong topic sentences;
- lots of relevant supporting ideas and details;
- concluding paragraph that restates thesis and/or summarizes main points and a concluding comment (prediction or suggestion)
- coherence (transitions, connecting words, clear pronoun reference)
- unity (all ideas relate to topic sentences/thesis
b. Grammar
- Independent dependent clauses
- Simple, compound, complex, complex-compound sentences
- FANBOYS
- Transitions
- Sentence Variety
- Punctuation
- Parallelism
- Sentence Problems (fragments, run-ons, etc.)
- Noun Clauses
- Contrast grammar (Oshima, p. 119-120)
