Week 10 Question

On Nov. 3rd we will take a short field trip to a local high school. During this visit, you will have the opportunity to meet and talk to American high school students. We will also use this visit as a way to generate ideas for Essay #4.

As a prelude to this trip, I'd like for you to discuss your impressions of American high school students. More specifically, I'd like you to explain what stereotypes you have about high school students in the U.S. (your assumptions about what you think American high school students are like). These stereotypes can be based on movies, TV shows, pop music, hearsay, or personal experience.

  1. I was away from that age for so long and I don’t have anyone around me from that age. According to the TVs and movies, high school girls wear makeup, cover themselves less than it should be, dress always with one size smaller than it should be, want to be cheerleaders, and want to be sb’s girlfriends. About the boys, they wear clothes that are meant for bigger figures, talk very little and only with his peer, and likes to compare what gears he get with his buddy. I know that this is not quite accurate. I will find out more when we visit the high school.

  2. When I was watching movie about American high school students,Girls wearing nice fancy clothing, such as mini skirt, dress and short pants, also they're wearing the make-up. And every boys have cars. Then after school, they going to shopping or friends house and go party at night. I couldn't imagin when I was high school student because usually Japanese high school, they don't accept wearing make-up for school and students can't drive for school.

  3. Sometimes, when I watched some movies and TV about American students, they usually showed bad behaviors such as drinking, drug, smoking, fighting, shooting, and so on. of course, now I can't believe at all. However, when I was a child, I was so surprised about those. I also followed them with my friends. Actually, more and more Korean students change like gasters so, nowdays it's so issue in Korea. Therefore, I wannaw know about difference between American students and Korean students.

  4. Based off of shows that I have seen in the past, I think that American high school students are seperated into groups bassed on their interests. For example, I have heared from my friends that they are in groups like nerds, athletes, and things like that. I have seen shows like "The OC" and it seems like it is a poor representaion of a normal high school life, or at least I hope. They make high school seems very dramatic in the shows.

  5. I sometimes watch the dramas or movies about Amrican drama such as high school musical and the OC. My stereotype of American high school is positive. The students do whatever they want. They don't have uniforms and homeroom teachers. They have club activities or free time to do something in which they are interested in American high school. On the other hand, Japanese students spend a lot of time. I used to be in high school at least 7 hours. Sometimes I went to school on Saturday. Compared with high school in my country, American high school looks better and freedom.

  6. since I came to Missoula, I have watched a lot of movies or TV shows, and then I realized that most American high school students conduct themselves with their strong a strong will that if someone says negative opinion about their determination in which they are interested such as music, art, sports or study on them, they do not change their determination. Also, people who are arond students such as teachers and parents try to bring out their latent abilities in many ways. However, I think that some Japanese students tend to hold by people who are their teachers, parents, friends' opinion without a strong will.

  7. I have the image or impression for American high school students that they are more free than Japanese high school students, for example the style of cloths, the style of taking classes and activities. In Japan, almost of the high school have the school uniform and they are restricted about how to wear them.In addition, girls can't make up when they go to school. On the other hand,in my impressions based on movies or TV program, Amrican high school students are fashionable and they can wear very freely by their will. Out of the class, they have another events that we don't have in Japan, such as dance party. The differences of life style are so interesting for me. I think it shows that American high school students are regarded as near adults more than Japanese high school students in their society.

  8. I have watched movies of American high school students and then I felt that they have more freedom than other countries like Japan because thay can drive and have parties on Friday or weekend. However, they take also responsibility by themselves,if they have problems. This is my opinion but I don't know it is true or not,so I want to ask American high school students this question next week.

  9. High school student appear in the American movies as a people who don't care about studying and this is not true because many of them care about their future as we see them in the univereties. For sure they care about their out of school life. For example, listening to music and watching movies but at the end of all of these they put their homework and studies at the beginning.

  10. As I have seen on a lot of American movies or American dramas, I am imaging that most high school student should have a lot of confident. They usually do whatever they want with out caring about their parent or their teacher. Friends have a lot of influence on them. They usually like to follow and their friend.

  11. American high school students are really different from others. They have really interesting lifestyle. Some called them as positive and some as negative. The high school rules don't prohibit to wear that clothes which they want to. In my case when I was in HS, it was prohibited to wear jeans or t-shirt, cuz we have uniforms for high school students and for universities students as well. I like how american HS students talk from HellGate students I can say that they are really full of energy, they have good behave very friendly, But one think which I didn't like not only in HellGate, but in all american HS's is that drug problem, everybody knows about that, but still don't do anything which could help to throw away from all high school. Generally I liked american High Schools

  12. From my opinion, i think that American high school students are really crazy and wild Teenagers as they show us in Movies but that is a fact because they think that they have to live thier life and try everything but not all of them. thier are some of them who is serous about thier study. All in all, we can`t judge all of them them same because of one or two it`s always depends on the person every one have his/her own personality.

  13. American students seem like freer than other, and they don’t have any obsession about their life. Most Korean teens have an obsession about going on to the university. So, they spend a lot of time just studying. Furthermore, they more enjoy doing outdoor activity than Korean students. I have an experience to teach high school students at cram school. There was no hobby doing outdoor activity among my students. Fortunately, American students really enjoy their life without any worrying.

  14. All of my expectation about U.S. high school comes from movie. I think American high school students have more time to do their favorite activity, which are sport or other things. They also don't have too much serious about their study.
