Week 11 Question

This week's question is on the less-than-serious side.

Halloween is probably my favorite holiday (as far as holiday's go). Maybe it's the fact that I've got a huge sweet tooth, or it could be that there always seems to be something fun to do on Halloween night. Then again, it might have something to do with the fact that I love Stephen King, a famous horror author.

Anyways, this week's question comes in three parts: First, what did you think about Halloween before you came to the U.S.? Second, what were your impressions of the holiday after your first Halloween (for those of you who have been here for more than a year)? And finally, what are you going to do/what did you do for this year's Halloween?

  1. I had no idea what the Halloween was before I came to the states. Then, after 1st Halloween, my impression about it was to celebrate the death, because wherever I went, I saw death related decoration such as skeletons, bloody deserts, graves, vampires…etc. and everybody party so hard for it. After reading about its origin, I accpet totally why people dress up like death and decorate their houses like graves. Still, I don’t agree with the sweet part that comes with every holiday. Therefore, as always, I’ll be the Halloween fairy who would exchage her presents with kids who are willing to submit most of their candies with me. Happy Halloween!

  2. I know the Halloween before I come to the U.S, but I thought it is just for children. When I came to the U.S, I found everyone celebrate this kind of celebration. It is really funny because everyone wears something scary and funny. For me, I won't make anything for this celebration.

  3. In fact, I have heard about the Halloween before I came to America because my mom has told me about it. My mom has been here, so she knows about that. However, I thought it is not big deal as it is when I was walking around. Anyways, I was wearing a prisoner costume with two friends. We went downtown and had a lot of fun there. Next time, I'll bring my costume from back home I'll let my mom make me one :)

  4. Since I was young I have heard a lot about a Halloween but I did not have a chance to dress or get into the party in Thailand. At first I thoungt that this day is just a day that not thing special and i was so curious that why many American people look really excited about this day. They prepare what they want to wear before the Halloween day about 3 weeks before, so it made me really surprise that why this days is so important to them. After my first Halloween passed, I just realize that this day is so fun because I have a chance to see and do different thing that I have never do before. For this year's Halloween, I have dress as a witch and went to the downtown with my friend. It was a nice and interesting for me.

  5. Before I came to the U.S, I had worked at family restaurant. The restaurant is always prepared at special days such as Halloween, and Korean anniversarys, so I already knew about it. However, I didn't know about it's origin. After I knew about that, I was interested and surprised because I didn't know that It celebrate about the god of death. Anyway, when I was in Korea, I used to wear some dresses such as, soldier, superman, and chucky. However, I didn't prepare anything at this Halloween and I didn't enjoy that day, so I'll enjoy at next Halloween, and I'll be Transformer.

  6. It was first time to celebrate Halloween in this year. Before I came here, I thought halloween was scary and weird event and especially for kids. What I imagined Halloween here was children did 'treak or treat' and decorated houses or rooms strangely like Vampire, skelton, bloodly and so on. But, what I experienced Halloween here was different from what I had thought. Everybody from children to adults enjoyed Halloween and dressed costumes. Celebrating halloween was so fun for me. What I did at halloween were visiting houses for 'trick or treat', joining Halloween party and dressing cat costume. I don't forget halloween in this year.

  7. Before I came to the U.S, I had not been iterested in halloween and I had no idea because I wondered why I have to wear a costume even though I am Japanese and I did not know what the purpose of Halloween is. However, Since I experienced it, I have understand gradually what the holiday is. In this halloween, I had time to buy a costume, so I went to the Party America and I bought it. Then I went a halloween party at the elks. Also, that was my birth day, so my friends gave me a lot of birth day shots. I had a great time on Halloween.

  9. Before I came to America, I had already know about the basic information of halloween, for example, trick or treat, jack-o-lantern, and many kinds of costumes. However,I didn' t know that American people regard Halloween as importantday. In my country, only few people celebrate this day. Some people have a party like America, but most of them don't know about the Halloween well.On the other hand, American people decorate their houses and carve pumpkins before the halloween day. For halloweeen day, I bought my costume and carved my pumpkin. Then,on that day, I tried a trick or treat. At first I was ashamed to do it, but eneryone welcomed us at the door. It was first time to experience the Halloween in America for me,so everything was so exciting.

  11. I knew about Halloween when I was in my country, But in Tajikistan we don't celebrate this holiday, I was always interested in participating in Halloween, cuz it looked fun for me. When I first time came to USA, it was October 4th 2007, almost close to Halloween, isn't it? So, on October 31, I walked out in Manhattan, New York, I was like WOW.... That day was unforgettable for me the streets were overcrowded. and music was all over the city. I think Halloween 2007 was one of the best time in my life. In Halloween 2009 I'm in Missoula, and on Friday October 30th we gonna have Halloween party for international students in Elk's Club, hole would be fun, I gonna be a Dracula, I hope all of of will have fan.

  12. I knew about the Halloween when I was in my country as well. I used to live in a privet campound which is calls (Aramco campound) Aramco is a campound in Saudi Arabia, it is like a small United State of America because most of the people who live there are Americans. So they celebrate for the Halloween and the New year as well. Last week I didnt go out from my appartment because i didnt think of a costume to wear, but I went to downtown and I saw the people there was a lot of different costumes in the street. I felt bad that I didnt have any costume to wear.

  14. I knew this celebration because it has been becoming a popular event in Korea. Many young people went to the U.S for studying early 1990s. After they came back to the Korea, they started to introduce this celebration into public. Now, people who wear spooky and fun dress at Halloween in Korea are easy to find at around the Hong University in Seoul. I think it was my first and last Halloween party in the U.S. So, I will really miss this party. First time, I wanted to wear and make up like Janus, but I didn’t have enough time to prepare that stuff. So, I just wore Phantom of the Opera and make up like zombie.
