Week 12 Question

Once again, I'd like to thank you all for doing such a great job at Hellgate HS on Wednesday. I hope it was as fun/interesting for you as it was for me.

For this week's question, I'd like you to reflect upon our experience at Hellgate. Based on the observations you were able to make about the teachers, students, classrooms, and the school in general, what is the most significant difference between American high schools and high schools in your country? Please give specific examples to support your answer.

As a follow-up question: What was the best part (for you) of our visit to Hellgate?

  1. Sorry because I didn't join my classmates to the Hellgate High School. However, I will talk about my experience about highschools. In Saudi Arabia, we don't have mix between girls and boys, each sex has seprate school. Also, teachers are men in the boys school and women in the girls school. Unlike highschools in the U.S, highschools in Saudi Arabia start their classes at 7 am. We usually get a long with our teachers when I was in the high school like now at the ELI, you feel the teachers are your friends before you feel that they are teachers. No strict rules, you can have fun class and talk as you like but without forgetting the respect for your teachers.

  2. When I was in high school, I had to wear uniform, get my hair cut in certain length- should not longer than my earlobes, and should never wear make up. I did not move from class to another class for different subject. The most significant difference is that everybody has to try hard to blend in with others as a whole. However, the American school cultivates individualism in every aspect especially in school. Students wear whatever they want, express whatever they have in their minds and it is totally alright to have different point of view with their teachers. I think that’s why majority of American are very creative and express themselves well, and majority of Asian are good team players.

  3. First of all I'd like to thank you Josh for given us such opportunity to become more familiar with educational system of America. As we are all student we should know everything which is concern education. You idea with HellGate HS really help me to discover more about american culture, education and people. The difference between American HS's and Tajik is big. First our final level is untill 11, when in US it's in till 12. Second we have strict rule for uniforms, dropout and especially drug problem, It's impossible if some HS student do drugs in HS, and administration don't do anything to prevent this thing. IN our HS's we don't have drugs at all. even in universities it is very rare. American HS's have more positive thing which we could use as examples, on the other hand we shouldn't some thing which could affect negatively for our high school students.

  4. As Moha said about the high schools in Saudi Arabia I would like to add some points such as we had to wear a uniform which we call it "thope" and we had to don't cut his hair in unrespectfull way and don't make it long. However, here in America, high school students are free to wear whatever they want and they can make their hair as they want, so it's so totally different from our high schools back home. When I was high school student I couldn't attend my classes one day because I cut my hair in unacceptable way, so one of the teachers didn't let me in. Then I had to cut my hair again :(
Furthermore, high schools in America are different from back home

  5. First of all, i'm sorry that i was late when you guys went to the school and thank you Josh for taking us there. In addition to Moha and Mohammed, back home in Saudi Arabia we cannt go out from the school durring our break. It's more different than high schools here in the U.S. Furthermore, our classes start at 7 a.m each class is for 45minute after the third class we take a break for 30minute after that we take three more classes then we have break for 30minute for our pray. Finally, after the pray we'll have the last class then we can go out from the school.

  6. One of them is a uniform. In korea, they, who are students, should wear a uniform, but there is no uniform in U.S high school. I think that a uniform is better than a casual because anybody can distinguish students easily, and a uniform is more convenient than others so, I always used to wear a uniform when I was in school. Second, there is no fence in U.S high school. I was so surprised that because fences surround every school in korea. We usually felt like prisoners so, I didn't want to go to school. Finally, there is no rule about appearance in U.S school. That's what I wanted because when I was in school, I had to shorten my hair, and couldn't wear any accessaries. The school even determined sstudents' socks, shoes, and bag.
When I visited the Hellgate high school, I learned about U.S high school students. If I have one more chance, I want to go to there yet again.

  7. First of all, thank you Josh for giving us such a chance! My major is education,so it was precious experience for me. By the way, the most significant difference between American high schools and high schools in Japan is the mood of the class. In Japan, high school students have to wear school uniforms and their life is strictly restricted by the rules, for example how to wear their uniforms, how to come to the school, and a ban of making up or having ears pierced. On the other hand,in Hellgate high school, I thought the students looked so freely and active. The best part of this visit is that we could see the real life of American high school students. They are so active and emotional,so I think we could have a good talking with them.

  9. As far as I concern, one thing that totally different between American high school and high school in Thailand is uniform. In every school in Thailand normally students have to wear a uniform. Every school have their own uniform which is differnt from each other. On the other hand, american student could wear every thing that they want which is totally different from my country. Another difference that I have notice that High school in the US is different from Thailand is that the class room. I have seen in Hell Gate high school that every student have to change their class room in every hour or every class. It is different from Thailand because nomally thai student do not have to change the class room offenly. They usually stay in one room and have their own table which they much to sit there whole semester.

  10. hmmmm,Actually I can’t remember pretty much about my high school life, but one thing I want to talk about is school uniform. School uniform has three of significant means. First one, school uniform could help student feel belonging to their school and united themselves. Second, why office of education had made school uniform is to get rid of a gap between rich and poor at least in the school. Finally, people can protect Juvenile delinquency and control their behavior by wearing school uniform.

  11. In Japan, all high school students wearing uniform. And Japanese high school students are not active like American high school students because in Japan usually don't have discussion time during class time. Only teachers teach us subject;therefore, students don't have to think about anything. However,American high school students every time think and say question for teachers. Japanese high school always quiet during the class time.

  12. I think the significant difference is rule.I felt that there are no strict rules especially about looking in U.S high school.First of all, in Japan,we have to wear uniform everyday both in private and public high school.I felt that it was convinient for me when I was a high school student because I did not decide which clothing I should wear, but now I think everyone looks same and have no originality. So,when I went to Hell Gate high school,I envied them.Second,I felt that teachers and student in U.S are much closer than Japanese because of no strict rules.(I do not know actually)I often had to follow whatever teacher said in my high school. Specially, it was difficult to point out teachers' mistakes. On the other hand, the students in U.S speak more in the class. Therefore, the significant different between U.S high school and Japanese is rule and U.S students look more free than Japanese.
Finally,I had precious time in Hell Gate high school and I could learn a lot of things from the students.Thank you very much, Josh!

  13. It was good experience that I visited Hellgate high school. Before visiting high school, I hesitated to go there because I was not interested in education so much. However, I have changed my mind since I saw high school students. I'm glad to have gone through observing high school students, We all ELI students asked American high school studnets about some issues like bullying, drugs, alcohole and relationship. Although high schools in Japan face simmilar issues, the most different thing between high schools in U.S. and in Japan is the way that students during the class. American students say their opinions freely, on the other hand, Japanese students are lectured perssively and silently. The best part of our visit is high school students are interested in having questions to us. I impressed that they are eager to ask our cultures. I really enjoyed interviewed and learned a lot.

  14. From that visit at Hellgate, I saw the differences between Thai students and American students in high school in many things. The first thing is the characteristic of the students. american students seem to participate the activities that teachers want them to do. On the other hand, in Thailand, students don't pay attention much about activities they don't want to do.
