Summary #2 Examples

Here are some examples of good summaries from our Week 11 summary HW.  Note that these are not perfect summaries, but they are good in two ways: first, the student included all or most of the main ideas from the reading; and second, the student did a good job of paraphrasing the information in his/her own words. Also note that the final two summaries DO NOT include in-text citations. Please remember that you should ALWAYS include citations when you take paraphrase or summarize information from other sources.

Passage 1 Example 1:

According to a language expert, English will not be the most important in future because the world is intricate.  Therefore, the native English speakers will decrease.  There is different [thinking] of ways in both developed and developing nations.  Although it was said that English is important as a second language, in the next ten years, Mandarin will be the new second language (Schmidt).

Passage 2 Example 1:

English is spoken all around the world. By 2050, it is expected that half the world get to have skills speaking English.  It is used in various fields.  Although English is not easy, it is the global language.  English has several difficulties in grammar, pronunciation, and spelling.

Passage 2 Example 2:

The [most common] language which is used in the world is English.  By the near future, it will be spoken with some degree of skill by half of people all over the world.  The international business, politics, and diplomacy have been made by globalization.  English has some difficulties such as spelling, pronunciation, and grammar, yet it will have become the world's common language.

Week 13 Blog Response

Hi!

For this week's response, I'd like you to go back and look over your classmates' responses, choose a response that you disagree with (even if only a little!), and respond by writing your own opinion.  To express your disagreement politely, you must use at least one of the following expressions:

  • I see what you mean, but I think that......
  • Perhaps that's true, but it may be that.....
  • True, but I'm afraid I disagree (with).....
  • There may be some truth in what you say, but it's possible that.....
  • I agree with what you said about.....; however/on the other hand, I would have to say that.....
  • I understand your point, but I see it a little differently.
  • That may be the case, but I feel.....
Note: You may have to go back to older blog responses from the early weeks of the semester (weeks 3, 4, 5, etc.). Some of these question topics elicited a few responses that you can probably disagree with.

Good luck!

Week 6 Question

Hi!

This week's questions is presented by Aisha.  The question is "open to interpretation" in that you can look at it from many different viewpoints. You might interpret it as asking for your feeling in general about the experience of coming to the U.S. (excited, nervous, anxious, scared, etc.); on the other hand, you might say something about how you felt about U.S. culture before you arrived here and how you feel now.  Here is the question:

How was your feeling before and after coming to the U.S.?

Think about your response and try to write as much as you can.

As always, happy writing!

Funnel Introductions

Hi!

For Monday, I'd like you to try write a funnel introduction for your process essay. To do so, look at the questions below to help you formulate your ideas. First, let's review the three goals of an introduction from Tuesday's class:

1. Get the reader's attention
2. Introduce your topic
3. Present your thesis (main idea of your essay)

To meet all three of these goals, try to answer the following questions:

1. What is your general topic? (not your specific topic, which you will introduce in question #3)
-Introduce it in an interesting complete sentence.

2. What are some examples of your general topic?
-Write some examples of this topic.

3. What is your specific topic? (more specific than #1 above)
-Introduce your specific topic in an interesting sentence.

4. What does your topic mean? Why is this topic important?
-Explain what your topic means, why it's important, what makes it relevant.

5. What is your thesis?
-Write your thesis.

We'll look at your introductions in class on Monday.

Good luck!

Why do people smoke while they know it is very unhealthy?

Good question Oyatullokhi!

Week 2 Question

Hi!

I hope you've made it this far. If so, welcome to the Spring 2012 Writing and Grammar 5 blog. On this blog, you will write about various topics and read about what other students have to say about these topics. More than anything, I'd like our blog to provide a forum for you to express your ideas and opinions. Therefore, it is important that you spend some time thinking about and writing your response. The more you write, the more interesting your response will be for me and the other students to read! At the same time, don't worry too much about having perfect grammar. The important thing is that you express your ideas fully (with enough information to understand what you want to say) and clearly (in a way everyone who reads it can understand).

For our warm-up question, I'd like you to write about your goals for this class. More specifically, what are 3 personal goals that you have for Writing and Grammar 5 this semester. These goals can be quite specific or more general. Please explain why each goal is important.

Thanks for writing. I look forward to reading your responses.

Josh
