This week's question is brought to us by Kate. If you haven't been in Missoula long, you might want to talk to some students who have been here for a few months before you answer. Better yet, talk to an American who has lived in Missoula for awhile. Here is the question:
What is the best way for you to spend the weekend in Missoula?
Good question, and by answering it, you might give thenew students some ideas on how they can enjoy their weekends here in Missoula.
Happy writing!
The best way to spend the weekend in Missoula is to go shooting. Actually, I habe stayed here about two weeks so this is the answer of my friends. If you do not have any guns, you should ask man who has a gun and go to mountain around here. First, you have to know haw to use it if you do not know. After that, you can shoot anything, but not your friends. Then, you have to be very careful.
ReplyDeleteIf you have never done it, shooting the gun is really great and rare experience because you can do any other things in your country such as going shopping, skiing or talking with your friends. This is the best way to spend the weekend in Missoula.
Hi Yui,
DeleteWhat an unexpected response! In just 3 weeks you have already acculturated to Montana's gun culture. As you said, you have to be safe while shooting, but it is a very fun activity if done safely. I will point out that in Montana, it's not only the men who have guns: many women also have their own rifles and pistols!
On Grammar:
This is a common challenge not only for many students but also for teachers--it's hard to understand and it's hard to explain! What I'm talking about is the use of articles. In your response, you have omitted the article "a" a few times. Here are the places where you want to add an "a"--
"...go to a mountain."
"shooting a gun is a really great and rare experience....."
I understand your point, but I see it a little differently. Maybe shooting is an interesting thing, but it is so dangerous to do it especially if you never try it before. Because you may shoot your friend or any person by mistake or you might shoot any animal in the mountain. Then, you will be in a big terrible.
DeleteDoing sports is the best way to spend the weekend in Missoula for me. There are many places to do sports there. I know I can play any sports when I am in Japan, not specially in Missoula, however I still want to play sports. I can feel refreshed by taking exercise. I would like to play sports on weekends wherever I am.
ReplyDeleteHi Yuki,
DeleteFirst, I'd like to see you write a bit more in your responses Yuki. Please share your ideas with us! There are many "new" sports that you can try here in Missoula, including football, kayaking, fishing, lacrosse, rugby, and so on. I hope you have the opportunity to try one of these sports!
On Grammar:
To be honest, we corrected the grammar for this paragraph in class on Thursday, so I'll make a quick comment on vocabulary usage. Instead of saying "doing sports," we say "playing sports." Moreover, instead of saying "taking exercise," we say "doing exercise."
Hope this helps.
Actually, there are not many places that I can spend best time on the weekend. However, I prefer to go skiing because it is a good time in winter; especially when the mountain is covering with snow and there is a sun rays. Also, sometimes on the weekend and after I wake up early and eat my breakfast I go to the down town and do some shopping. Then, I go to a restaurant and eat lunch. Next, I go to the cinema to watch movie. Moreover, some weekend I meet my friends, spend night, and eat dinner with them. Furthermore, sometimes I spend my weekend at my home because I want to make some clean to my home or because I have a lot of homework’s and quizzes. Finally, I think the weekend is a good time to relax our bodies after work and effort during the week.
ReplyDeleteHi Aisha,
DeleteI didn't know that you like to ski! What a great way to spend a weekend in and around Missoula. I also agree that the weekend is a time to relax. It's nice to have a couple of days off of work. Though these days, just as you have homework, I've got work to do on the weekends!
On grammar:
Here is a short comment on present and past participle use.
You say "the mountain is covering with snow." The correct from is the past participle form: "The mountain is covered with snow." This is like a passive phrase but instead of "by" we have the proposition "with." Here is another example:
"My car is covered with mud."
Hope this helps.
There are a lot of ways to spend the weekend in Missoula. For example, you can go to trip and have an interesting time or you can spend the weekend with your friends. For me, usually I spend the weekend in three things. The first thing is to go to the supermarket and buy some stuff for home. The second thing is “meeting “; I spend every Saturday with my friends. The third thing is “cleaning “. I always clean the home in the weekend. However, the best thing for me is staying at home. With these things, I really feel tired these days. So, I want spend the whole weekend without doing anything.
ReplyDeleteHi Ayidah,
DeleteIt sounds like your typical weekend is quite busy. I bet your weekends are quite productive if you usually do all of these things. I also try to clean on the weekends, but it's so much more fun to do other things (like go fishing)!
On grammar:
Here are two vocabulary usage comments:
1. Instead of saying "go to trip," we say "go on a trip."
--> You can go on a trip.
2. Instead of "in the weekend," the correct preposition phrase is "on the weekend."
-->I always clean the home on the weekend.
Hope this helps.
Actually, there are few places to go to spend the weekend time. Usually I just go to walmart at friday afternoon, and then go to my friend's house to cook some chinese food. After dinner we play chinese poker card together until midnight. Sometime we are going to go Lolo to take spring or go to flathead lake to have a BBQ. Lolo hot spring is good, but we usually go to a natural spring just few miles away from Lolo. It is not very clean and clear, but it is 100% natural. I like it! Also flathead lake is a good place to go to take a nice BBQ. There has a welmart near it, so we don't worry about the cooking stuff, just call my friends, put the grill oven, and go! Finally, I think we have some place to go and that is kind of interesting!
ReplyDeleteHi Bohan,
DeleteYour typical weekend is a lot like mine: visit friends, go to the lake, river, or hot springs, have a BBQ with friends, and so on. I love the natural hot springs on the other side of the Idaho/Montana border. To tell you the truth, some of the pools are pretty clean.
On grammar:
Here is a quick comment on preposition use:
With days, we use "on."
-->On Friday, on Monday, etc.
One more quick grammar point:
Instead of "there has" we just say "there is." I remember that you mentioned the "there/it" forms being a little confusing, so I thought I'd mention this point.
Hope this helps.
Actually, I had lived in Tokyo for two years and half, and there are a lot of good places to spend a weekend. I mean, we have many choice to do something or go somewhere in Tokyo. It might be harder to find the place to enjoy a weekend here than Tokyo. However, I would answer this question; my favorite way to spend a weekend is to go snowboarding (or skiing). I really like snowboarding, and Missoula has much snow. In this winter, I went snowboarding a few times, and had good times. My friends said to me that when I went snowboarding, I looked excited. It was true. If you like skiing or snowboarding, I recommend you going skiing or snowboarding. However, I also think that a week end is a good time to study or take a rest. haha Anyway, Enjoy Missoula’s life!
ReplyDeleteHi Fumika,
DeleteI used to ski but switched to snowboarding a few years back; I don't think I'll ever go back to skiing! Snowboarding is such a great way to spend a winter weekend. I love it. I was lucky enough to go snowboarding at Maverick Mountain a few weeks ago. Afterwards, we soaked in the hot springs, which is the perfect follow-up to a day of snowboarding.
On grammar:
I want to direct your attention to a unique noun clause form that we have discussed in class: the subjunctive.
With verbs like recommend, suggest, demand, and so on, we use this form:
I suggest that S V. Remember that the verb should be the base form no matter what the subject is.
In your sentence, "I recommend you going skiing," you could use the subjunctive.
-->I recommend that you go skiing.
Here's another example:
-->I recommend that she go skiing. (note: base form of the verb!).
You could also say, " I recommend going skiing."
Hope this helps.
The best way to spend the weekend in Missoula for me is to go running, using sauna, swimming at the pool, going to Mall, and playing games on XBOX or PlayStation 3 with my friends. From all of these activities three of them are healthiest exercises (activities, sports) in the world. Running, using sauna, and swimming make you lost your weight that you don’t want to see or by another words you can lose fat in your body, and you will be in a good shape while doing/you do these exercises. For example previous semester I used to do these activities and I felt myself very light and I was in a good shape. Also my friends they used to do these activities, they liked it a lot. By doing these activities you not only can make your body or yourself stronger but also you can organize everything like you depression will be gone, and even your eyes will be brighter. For instance, one of my friends he used to wear glasses while he wanted to read some articles or books but when he started to do these activities like running, going to sauna, and swimming with us after one month his eyes completely became bright, so now he don’t need glasses to help him to read some articles or books even research something in Internet, because he can see he can read without any problem. Playing games on XBOX or PlayStation 3 also helped me to feel better. After week of study I will be very tired, so I need some rest for this reason I played a lot of games on XBOX or PlayStation to be relaxed. This Semester became little bit different than previous one because I am not doing all of these activities like running, using sauna, swimming, going to Mall, and playing games on Xbox or PlayStation 3 because of work. This semester I am working on the weekend, so I don’t have enough time to do something else but I like my work, because their I use to communicate in English all the time.
